Description
Despite opening in May 1990, stepping into Hermitage Cafe felt like stepping into a much much earlier time. The simple cinderblock building located downtown on Hermitage Ave was a timeless experience. Imagine the inspiration for Waffle House and you’re on the right path.
Originally, the diner served many of the employees and visitors of the Nashville Metro General Hospital but when that closed completely in 2000, the focus of patrons shifted more to a late night crowd and workers looking for an affordable breakfast. There was an in-depth cover story by the Nashville Scene covering all of the individuals involved; Shields Taylor and his wife Patricia, who took over after this death. Servers Linda “Cissy” Siegrist and her mother Linda “Mama” Caldwell were mainstays and if you ever ate there, you probably met them.
It was unbelievably affordable, unfathomably delicious and quintessential to Nashville. It’s beyond unfortunate that it is gone but nothing can take away the memories of white gravy at 2am.
