Description
The building at 114 2nd Ave S most recently housed Headquarters, a barcade that provided a nice respite from the craziness just off of Broadway. The building was built 125-years ago and has housed a number of memorable Nashville destinations, including the dance destination Ace of Clubs. At least, that’s what owner Scott Crane intended for it to be back in 1989 when he opened it up with go-go dancer cages and a giant balcony area.
The club ended up being a bit of everything downtown Nashville needed at the time; a dance club, a bar and a live music venue where Shania Twain, Jeff Buckley, Morphine, K’s Choice and countless others played. Technically it was a restaurant too but that was never the primary draw. Crane cites free entertainment downtown such as Dancin’ in the District as the primary reason the club shut down just nine years after it opened in 1998; it just could not compete with free.
There are reports in 2023 that the building is to be razed due to required repairs that are not possible with the historic nature of the site. It’s a true tragedy (and bummer) given the age of the building and the history it contains. Ace of Clubs was one of many historical sparks in that building; a short spark but a bright one.
