Description
In the list of beloved late night spots in the Nashville area, few names ring as loud and clear as Cafe Coco. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the diner nestled just around the corner from Exit/In (at 210 Louise Ave) was a gathering place for Vanderbilt students, ne’er do well crust punks, hysterical drag queens and neighborhood folks that just enjoyed a hot cup of coffee and a tasty sandwich.
The building, built in 1920, had character in every nook and cranny. Owner Chuck Cinelli purchased the two-story home and opened the cafe in 1995. The comforting environment he managed to cultivate resulted in a front porch that was always filled with a variety of characters, a back room hosting music, comedy or stand-up poetry and, most importantly, an unforgettable mark on the city.
Cafe Coco was sold in 2020 to new owners who did their best to keep the dream alive but it puttered out in 2023 to very little fanfare. Brand new owners have converted the space into a cocktail bar upstairs and a neighborhood bar downstairs. Go visit Connie’s Upscale Dive and pay homage to one of Nashville’s very best.
