Description

Surprisingly, Cat’s Music has roots that go back as far as 1953; when a man named Hutch Carlock started Music City Record Distributors. The distribution business evolved and in 1974 opened its first retail store; Cat’s Music. Over the next three decades it would ebb and flow with growth and reduction; sometimes having locations bought by competitors like Turtle’s music or in good years, purchasing other music stores such as Pop Tunes in Memphis. Eventually the demand for physical music fizzled and they filed for Chapter 11 in the 2000s.

Thirty years is a good run and Cat’s left an indelible mark on many Nashville residents. Free rooftop concerts at the West End location are a thing of infamy. Extra Fun fact: Bruce Fitzpatrick of The End was a buyer for Cat’s Music in the early 1980’s! Tuck that one away for trivia night.

Pay tribute to Cat’s Music by visiting your local indie record store! Yes, they’re real and they’re glorious.
