Description
There have been plenty of adult entertainment showbars to close in the Nashville area (Ken’s Gold Club, Crazy Horse, The Arrow) but none have the wild history of Classic Cat. The downtown club was both firebombed and the target of the largest car bomb attack in Tennessee’s history – approximately 150 pounds of explosives that would have leveled multiple blocks had the police not disarmed it (with only 20 minutes to spare no less!). The club owner’s disgruntled ex-husband, Arthur Wayne Baldwin, was responsible for both.
The wild stories don’t stop there! A monkey named Pete belonged to one of the dancers at the club and he escaped in such a wild fashion that it made regional headlines. The bar itself was often the target of police harassment for violating “indecency” laws, even after judges deemed the ordinances unconstitutional. And if all that weren’t enough, Metro ultimately forced them to relocate because of their troubling proximity to Hume-Fogg High School.
There’s a lot of hardships and bad power dynamics involved with bars of this kind but the story of Classic Cat is an important part of Nashville history.
