Description

The tale of F. Scott’s Restaurant and Wine Bar is as involved as the story of a Jazz Era novel; akin to the intrigue of high society you’d find in The Great Gatsby. The spot was opened in December 1986 by Mrs. Daisy King, a well established Nashville restaurateur, in the old Bon Vivant bakery in Green Hills, next to the Kroger. By May of 87, the establishment had changed hands to Randy Rayburn of Sunset Grill and new chef Anita Hartell of Tin Angel. In late 1989, they sold it off to Hoyt Hill of Julian’s and he brought in his own new chef, Josh Weakley. Then, Kroger expanded and pushed F. Scott’s out to a new location over on Crestmoor, right outside the mall. Oh, and Hill sold his shares to the Z1 corporation in 1993, only to have Z1 sell the business to Allen Fiuzat and Ben Robichaux in 1996.

Who owned the restaurant really isn’t that important but it’s an impressive changing of hands worth noting. The vibe of the bar was warm and Art Deco themed, complete with an F. Scott’s Fitzgerald portrait and stained glass. The menu changed quite a few times throughout the duration but it was always surprisingly eclectic and refreshingly tasty; including plenty of soups, pastas and seafood. It was a spot for politicians and pre-Internet influencers to be seen; often enjoying a healthy pour at the bar.

The best part? If you whispered the right secret password to the bartender, you’d get an incredible discount, a free snack or some other undeniable treat just for being in the know.

F. Scott’s closed in May 2014, twenty-eight years of neighborhood enjoyment ain’t bad!
