Description
In Jan of 2003, Mercy Lounge was opened in the second floor space of the Cannery complex; a massive brick building that has been home to a flour mill, a coffee mill, a jam processing plant, a western wear shop, and even a TBN filming location. The venue was the newest in a long lineage of rock, country and underground music venues that had come before it in the same building.
Even with all that history behind it, Mercy Lounge managed to make a real name for itself over its nineteen year run. The owners established a fantastic ability to balance high profile touring acts with memorable local artists and unique performances (a live rendition of Les Miserables and a full-band performance of ELO’s Out of the Blue among them) . Mercy Lounge’s 8 Off 8th series showcased local talent and even managed to send bands to Bonnaroo.
The venue expanded to the downstairs space – The Cannery – and a smaller venue next door to Mercy called The High Watt. This trio of venues was a powerhouse in town for decades, a sentiment that is hard to overstate.
All three venues were in 2022 closed when the ownership of the building changed hands and the new owners decided to pursue their own idea – a trio of venues. A damn shame if ever there was one but many of those involved with the venue have gone on to open even more incredible spaces in Nashville including Eastside Bowl, Rosemary & Beauty Queen, Strega and more.
