Description
In the late 1960’s, there was a club on Gallatin Pike called The Hearth; a popular spot for live music and drinking for a wide variety of musicians, politicians and other societal notables. It’s popularity waned over time but the walls were filled with stories.
In 1983, a native of Sicily, Italy named Biagio Sosta purchased the building that housed The Hearth and a year later opened Smeraldo’s Authentic Italian, a restaurant offering classics from his home country, live music and a lounge. Smeraldo’s kept the spirit of The Hearth alive with many nights of live music and drink specials but it was the in-house Italian culinary delights that kept them on the map. Biagio often served as host at the location, so you always got a passionate experience.
The restaurant closed in 2021; after nearly fourty years in business. Many would claim that the decor never changed much since the grand opening in the early 80s, which wasn’t updated much from the decor of The Hearth in the late 60s. It was a time capsule and a rare gem for Nashville.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t also note that the location is now set to become a tiki bar called The Dirty Monkey, relocating from Hawaii. Dubious but intrigued.
