Description
Starting in 1981 and running through 1997, the Summer Lights festival took place on Legislative Plaza in front of War Memorial Auditorium. Multiple stages showcased bluegrass, jazz, blues, and country music, with food vendors and craftsmen selling their arts. Unbeknownst to most, behind the scenes it was always a highly tumultuous event to put together and profit from particularly in competition with the Italian Street Fair and Dancin’ in the District.
It fizzled but its legacy lives on with a revitalized downtown corridor and a logo that’s never been topped by another endeavor.
