Description

Way back in 1971, a food co-op was started in the basement of Vanderbilt’s Scarritt-Bennett Center. After a quick stint off Music Row as “New Morning,” a full-fledged grocery store in Midtown was opened called Sunshine Grocery. From the 70s through 1989, the spot was one of the first destinations in Nashville to carry yogurt, tofu or bean sprouts. Seriously.

The business boomed and they moved locations to Belmont Blvd, where they operated for another ten years before agreeing to be purchased by the Wild Oats chain. During their thirty years of operation, they managed to fully accomplish their mission: give Nashvillian’s a healthy and alternative way of eating.
