Description

In November 1980, Church St was not a destination one spent much time at. That didn’t stop owners Howell and Jeff Bartee and Elaine Masto from opening up The World’s End, a restaurant at 1713 Church dedicated to providing live music, cabaret, comedy and food; especially for the after theater crowd. It was also established as a safe haven for the LGBTQ to come and feel safe; a true rarity in the early 1980’s of Nashville. Unfortunately, this also came with a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” kind of policy – the front windows were blacked out and the back entrance allowed patrons to enter without being seen.

In 1983, a fire caused extensive damage to the property but the co-owners used it as an opportunity to expand. They remodeled and added a music room, another bar, a new menu and seating for 175.  A late night fashion show kicked off the celebration. By the early 90s, there was even a sister club called The Midnight Sun; where one Mary Mancini was DJ’ing when she got the idea to open Lucy’s Record Shop.

Most importantly, The World’s End worked with a wide variety of non-profits and programs to help raise funds and awareness for LGBTQ issues. They partnered with the Poverty Playhouse, the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice, and National Coming Out Day. Thanks to The World’s End, clubs like Tribe, Trax, Play, Blue Genes, and Canvas (to name but a few) can operate in the open.
