The venerable Lightning 100.1 once had a sister station named Thunder 94. Transmitting on 94.1FM during the mid-90s, the station focused on modern and alternative rock. Thunder 94 played through the likes of Stone Temple Pilots, Luscious Jackson, Ben Folds Five and Liz Phair; wile simultaneously being a champion of local artists and local venues. It was like listening to MTV’s Alternative Nation twenty-four hours a day.
In the late 90s, Thunder 94’s parent group pulled the plug on the influential station due to competition from other local rock stations. The station only broadcasted for two years but it left a massive impression on the city.
Rumor has it they went off the air by playing Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose” on repeat.
