Description

From 1998 to 2004, Uptown Mix was a free concert series that took place during the fall over in the Midtown area (near South Street for those that remember). Though it was sometimes cast as an imitator to Dancin’ in the District, Uptown Mix had two very distinct differences going for it: the age limit and the booker. Being a 21-and-over event ensured the crowd was full of adults (or clever teens) with no shortage of alternative options and probably there for the bands. Secondly, the bookers for the event really pulled out all the stops, making sure that the lineups were not to be missed.

Just for a fun jaunt down memory lane, the likes of Patti Smith, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, The Polyphonic Spree, The Features, Keb’Mo, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise, Steve Earle, Josh Rouse, The Jayhawks, Matthew Sweet, Superdrag, Cracker, Better than Ezra, Joan Osborne, The Smithereens, The Katies, Big Star, Fleming & John, Lucinda Williams, Concrete Blonde, Glossary, Violent Femmes, X, Ben Folds, Soul Asylum, Eels, Guided by Voices, and countless more graced the stage at Uptown Mix.

In 2001, developers started sniffing around and decided a giant high-rise of condos would be a better fit for the neighborhood than a gravel parking lot (to be fair, they were right). It took a few years but by 2004, the weekly festival had outgrown itself and the parking lot was sold shortly thereafter.

It was a very memorable six years to say the very least.
