Description

Named after a hotel in Monteagle, Blue Sky Court was sometimes referred to as Nashville’s only *true* coffeeshop. That title was a bit of a misnomer but in 1992, options for partaking in coffee culture were quite slim.  Bongo Java and Fido didn’t exist yet, JJ’s Market existed but didn’t have the same atmosphere. Owner, and sculptor, Somers Randolph opened Blue Sky Court to give people a place to gather, wax intellectual and enjoy the wine of the bean.

The coffee shop had plenty of art shows, benefits and live music but Randolph moved to New Mexico to focus on his sculpting. By 1996, he shuttered the name and let the venue change; eventually becoming The Phoenix and The Eighth Day over the years. There was a reboot in 2002 forged by Freddie Upp that resulted in an era of great live music but sputtered by 2005, making way for The Rutledge.

It was a bumpy road for 410 4th Ave S. but there’s a lot of rich history, countless shows and empty cups.
