Description

In 1995, downtown Nashville was just beginning to become a comfortable destination for both locals and tourists. Dancin’ in the District was going strong and a group of investors turned a five-story grocery warehouse into The Music City Mix Factory; a conglomerate of clubs and restaurants all shoved into one building.

On the ground floor, enjoy some New Orleans dining at The French Market Cafe. Travel up one floor to the zebra striped walls of The Zoo for eclectic live music courtesy of bands like Mel & The Party Hats, Ugly Kid Joe or Little River Band. The top two stories all belonged to Close Encounters, adorned with pyramids, pharaohs, and a wall of televisions displaying the bump n grinders on the dancefloor. To take a break from it all, patrons hit the rooftop bar – The Planetarium – for a dazzling view of the city.

It lasted for about five years before the Mix Factory shut down. Trafalgar Square and then The Nashville Castle tried to live up the Mix Factory’s great name but even they fell short. All we have now are the memories, the sweaty, sweaty memories.
