Description

For 25 million dollars, MetroCenter in North Nashville gained a 175,000 square-foot shopping complex bursting with retail, office spaces, a movie theater and even paddle boats called Fountain Square. Built in 1987 and closed in 1990, the destination burned real bright but competition from Harding Mall, Hickory Hollow Mall, and 100 Oaks Mall led to lack of sufficient income.

Fountain Square was a blip in Nashville’s history but many will remember the Heartthrob Cafe, the AMC Fountain Square 14 movie multiplex (the largest movie theater in Nashville at the time), the literal floating fountain in the lake or the Celebrity Star Walk celebrating Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Emmylou Harris to name a few. It was a good idea with poorly timed execution. The building eventually became the campus of Watkin’s School of Art and Design, so it wasn’t all bad.

Pay tribute to Fountain Square by driving blindly around the MetroCenter area trying to find the Comcast offices so you can return your cable box.
