Description

WYHY 107.5 began broadcasting in Nashville in 1982. As an adult contemporary station, it stumbled along to find an audience but in 1984, they shifted to Top 40 music and hired DJ Coyote McCloud; opening the flood gates to change. The station quickly became known for its “Outrageous FM” morning antics led by Coyote McCloud and the Morning Zoo Crew.

The am transmissions were a huge hit with the youth demographic as the morning crew was considered outlandish and offensive for the time, earning McCloud the early label of “Shock Jock.” His Zoo Crew (Rhett Walker, Deacon Dave, Buck Nayked, Dana Knight, Producer Blair), pushed the envelope with skits like Jeffrey Dahmer juggling body parts, President Reagan taking drugs and even some on-air bestiality discussion (ok, that one got him banned for a little while). Mostly it was bad puns, sex humor and off color observations.

The religious right forecasted that Coyote McCloud was a major contributor to the downfall of society. Local schools banned listening to Y107 on campus. But ultimately, it was dwindling ad sales that forced the hand of the radio station to try something new, ushering the crew, the antics and even the toucan on to greener pastures.

The cancellation was unfortunate but they lasted from 1984 to 1995. McCloud and his crew made an indelible mark on the city, especially if you happened to be a pre-teen in the 80s. He passed away in 2011 but, clearly, left quite a legacy.

Oh, one of the most interesting things about Coyote McCloud was not the drive time antics but, rather, that he is responsible for writing a song in 1984 called “Where’s The Beef?” – used by Wendy’s restaurants as part of their infamous ad campaign.
