Description

Modern day Nasvillians know it as “The Chuy’s in Midtown” but back in the early 1980s, the hot spot at 1901 Broadway was home to Cantrell’s, a rock club friendly to local bookings and a homebase for Nashville’s New Wave. Owned and operated by Terry Cantrell, who has managed The Springwater since 1978, Cantrell’s is often cited as responsible for shepherding Nashville’s non-country scene into a wider spotlight by supporting locals Jason and the Nashville Scorchers, Factual, The Ratz and national punk acts like Black Flag, Minor Threat and Circle Jerks.

The venue lasted from 1980 to 1986 before fizzling out thanks to a number of government audits that wore Terry Cantrell out (he had a day job at The Department of Transportation!). By that time, 328 Performance Hall, Cannery Ballroom and 12th & Porter had arrived to continue supporting the scene. Six years is a small blip in the realm of music scenes but Cantrell’s left a big mark and the building still stands today; drive on by and blast some New Wave and Punk in its honor.
